What kind of investments can get you a residence in Costa Rica?

A walkthrough of the Law 9996 and its bylaws

In July 2021, the Law for the attraction of investors, rentiers and pensioners No. 9996 came into force -for a window of only 5 years-, which grants tax and immigration benefits to those seeking to invest in Costa Rica. The main immigration benefit that allows a person and their family nucleus (spouse, children and dependent parents) to qualify for temporary residence as an investor. These residences are renewable and are granted for a period of two years. It should be remembered that any temporary resident, after 3 years, can request a change of immigration status to consider themselves a permanent resident.

How much do I have to invest to obtain a residence as an investor?

First of all, the Law and its regulations establish the threshold to invest in only one hundred and fifty thousand dollars (USD$150,000). This capital that comes from abroad, the law clearly establishes that it will not be subject to any tax, giving the green light for the entry of foreign capital.

What additional benefits does residency provide as an investor?

In addition to the right to legally reside in Costa Rica, you obtain the following rights or benefits:

  1. Right to import, free of all import taxes, up to 2 vehicles of any type: yacht, cars or planes.

  2. Right to import, free of all import taxes, tax payment to import household items regardless of whether they are new or used goods.

  3. Right to import, free of all import taxes, professional work team.

  4. A 20% discount on the real estate transfer tax.

You can also proceed and invest through a registered stock exchange company or in a venture capital fund.

Projects of national interest

If the investment corresponds to a project of public interest, the declaration of public interest of the project must be related. In this category, investments in forestry plantations and investments in productive projects are also allowed.

Sustainable tourism projects

Technical criteria issued by the ICT that the project through which the investment is made is a sustainable tourism infrastructure,

Registrable mobile assets

Any type of vehicle (car, aircraft, ship) that is registered in the name of the applicant natural person.

Real Estate

Regardless of whether or not they have construction, as long as the property is registered in a personal capacity (and not as a company) it is possible to apply for residence.

Shares

Shares of a company duly registered with Taxation.
